Chainmail Hoods
The Steel Crown of the Medieval Knight
In the days when Crusaders and Normans forged legends, the chainmail hood was more than a defense: it was your seal of valor. Woven ring by ring in the European 4-in-1 technique, this hood protected the head, neck, shoulders, and chest with its elegant square cut. The folding ventail—a padded, leather-lined mail flap—was a shield from the edge, ready to be raised or secured depending on the fight. All this, nestled atop a padded, impact-resistant coif, as the wisdom of true warriors once demanded.
Main features:
- Comprehensive skull, neck, shoulders and chest coverage with authentic square design.
- Triangular or square folding window : padded interior and leather lining, with straps or cords for fastening.
- 4-in-1 fabric with riveted/stapled rings for maximum strength.
- Use over a padded or textile cap to cushion impacts.
- Highly representative of the High Middle Ages (11th–13th centuries), adopted by Normans and Crusaders.
- Gradually replaced by the aventail (a mesh curtain attached to the helmet) from the 14th century.
