Viking Age Clothing and Footwear (8th - 11th Centuries): Tradition and Functionality
Viking Age clothing and footwear reflected the functionality and style needed to survive the cold and challenging environments of Northern Europe. This collection brings together the most distinctive garments, differentiated by gender and adapted to the needs of a warrior and explorer culture.
Men's clothing
- Tunic: A basic garment made of wool or linen, usually knee-length. The upper classes decorated their tunics with embroidery and decorations.
- Trousers: Made of wool, they could be tight or wide, like the Rus trousers, depending on the region and the season.
- Belt: Made of leather, used to hold the tunic and carry saxes, axes, or keys. Decorated belts were common among the upper classes.
- Cloaks, capes, and hoods: Made of thick wool or fur, they provided protection from the cold. They were fastened with metal clasps or buckles.
- Shoes or boots: Functional and made of leather, they offered protection against rough terrain and the cold. High-top boots were common in wet and cold environments.
Women's Clothing
- Dress: A basic garment made of wool or linen that covered from the shoulders to the ankles. Upper-class dresses were more ornate and colorful.
- Apron (smock): Worn over the dress, made of thick cloth and fastened with brooches called "Turtles", joined by necklaces of beads and pendants.
- Belt: Similar to the men's belt, it allowed carrying small objects and could be decorated with amulets or leather bags.
- Cloak, cape, or hood: Wool or fur garments that protected from the cold. The most elaborate cloaks are held in place with metal clasps.
- Shoes or boots: Made of leather, functional and more ornate in the upper classes.
- Headdress: Cloth veils worn to cover the hair at formal events. Upper-class women added ornaments or jewels to their headdresses.
