This medieval bag made of sturdy canvas, also known as a pilgrim's bag or bread bag , can be worn as a cross-body bag or as a shoulder bag. A braided band in the same colour runs over the approx. 6 cm wide carrying strap. The bag can be tied up with an attached cord and a bar to protect it from thieves. The sides of the bag and the ends of the cord are decorated with small tassels.



Shoulder bags were used by both women and men in the Middle Ages and were a more spacious alternative to the smaller bags that were worn on the belt. Cloth bags were used both on longer journeys or pilgrimages as pilgrim bags and in everyday life and at work as handbags, provision bags, etc. They were not decorative, but purely functional accessories that served to store everything needed during the journey and conveniently to carry with you. Depictions of medieval bags can be found, for example, in the Maciejowski Bible (also Crusader Bible ) from the 13th century.
