Gambeson Parts and Accessories
The life support of all armor
The gambeson was one of the most indispensable pieces of clothing in the Middle Ages , not only as a single garment, but also as the base on which the weight of chain mail or plate armor rested. Gambeson accessories and parts, such as sleeves, padded reinforcements, shoulder guards, collars, and caps , were essential to increase the combatant's comfort, protection, and versatility in battle.
His role in protecting the warrior
An unadorned gambeson was useful, but incomplete. With its removable reinforcements , it allowed defense to be adapted to different scenarios: sleeves that absorbed sword blows, padded shoulder pads that relieved the weight of metal armor, or padded collars and caps that protected the head and throat from cuts and pressure. These components not only extended the life of the gambeson, but also that of the warrior wearing it.
- Gambeson sleeves : These were attached to the main body and offered flexible protection for the arms.
- Padded shoulder pads : designed to support the weight of mail and breastplates.
- Neck reinforcements : vital to cover the warrior's most vulnerable area.
- Thigh guards : additions that extended the gambeson's defense towards the legs.
- Padded collars : These provided a comfortable and defensive base under collars, gorgets or helmets.
- Padded caps : they cushioned blows to the head and served as internal support for helmets and helms.
