Zischägge, 17th century
The Zischägge, also called the Pappenheimer helmet, Hungarian balaclava or lobster-tail helmet because of its shape, was a riding helmet used in Europe in the 17th century.
It consisted of a hemispherical helmet hood, cheek pieces with ear holes, the characteristic neck shield, an eye or forehead shield and a nose plate. It was initially used by Hungarian hussars and Polish cavalrymen, but from the 17th century onwards it was also used in Central Europe by arquebus and dragoon riders.
This replica of the Zischägge is a variant called the three-bar boat , which offers three bars on the visor that are welded together at their ends. The lobster tail consists of three riveted plates. A practical, size-adjustable leather insert is located on the helmet.
