Enjoy Zischägge, 17th Century
Zischägge, 17th century
The Zischägge, also called the Pappenheimer helmet, Hungarian balaclava, or lobster-tail helmet due to its shape, was a riding helmet used in Europe in the 17th century.
It consisted of a hemispherical helmet bell, cheek pieces with ear loops, the characteristic neck shield, an eye or forehead shield, and a nose plate. It was initially used by Hungarian hussars and Polish cavalry, but from the 17th century onwards it was also used in Central Europe by arquebus riders and dragoons.
This replica of the Zischägge is a variant called the three-bar boat , which offers three bars on the visor that are welded together at their ends. The lobster tail consists of three riveted plates. The helmet features a practical, size-adjustable leather insert.
