Acquire Greek Xiphos, Hoplite Sword with Scabbard
Greek xiphos, hoplite sword with scabbard
The hoplites of ancient greece, the brave citizen-soldiers who fought on foot, were known primarily for their battle phalanx formation with a spear or lance ( dory ) and a large round shield ( aspis / hoplon ). They are often depicted with a secondary weapon. One such weapon used on the ancient greek battlefields was the so-called xiphoi , a straight, relatively short sword with a double-edged, leaf-shaped blade. Popular among greek armies (including the infamous spartans), this short sword was designed as a slashing and stabbing weapon for infantry and served primarily as a backup weapon in close combat or if the spear was broken, lost, or torn out of one's hands. Although very few examples of the xiphoi survive, numerous artistic depictions of them have survived, especially in ancient greek pottery paintings, having escaped the ravages of time.
This beautiful reconstruction of a hoplite sword has the typical blade shape of a classic xiphos from the 6th/5th century BC. The untempered EN45 spring steel blade, initially positioned below the flared blade root, gradually widens towards the center and then tapers again towards the base. The cutting edges are unsharpened. The authentically shaped handle consists of a wooden pommel with a steel cap, a steel forend, and a handle section with a thick steel tang and riveted wooden grips.
The Greek one-handed sword offered here comes with a wooden scabbard covered in red leather. The mouthpiece and bezel have a distinctive shape and are also made of wood. To allow the user to carry their xiphos on a strap over their shoulder like a true Greek warrior, brass rings are attached to the scabbard using leather straps.
This sword is designed as a collector's item or decorative object and is also ideal as an accessory, for example to complete your costume.
