The wakizashi, the weapon of honorable people in feudal Japan, was also permitted for use by socially respected citizens, while the katana was reserved for samurai. The short sword was worn in the obi and was more advantageous for fighting in small spaces than the long sword. The short sword was also used for ritual suicide or for severing the head of a slain enemy.

Katana and wakizashi formed a pair of swords, which is called daisho.
