Wakizashi with black wooden scabbard, marto
The wakizashi, meaning side-sheathed sword, is one of the traditional Japanese swords carried by the samurai class in federal Japan.
The wakizashi, used in conjunction with the katana, was the official symbol of its user as a samurai, or swordsman of federalist Japan. When used together, the pair of swords was called a daisho, which literally means large-small. The wakizashi was one of several short swords available to samurai, including the tanto.
While katana carrying was restricted to the samurai class, the chonin class could use the legal-length wakizashi (ko-wakizashi), which also included merchants. This was common when traveling due to the risk of encountering bandits. Wakizashi were worn on the left side, attached to the hip sash.
