Viking Blood gets its name from its distinctive reddish color, which is achieved by adding hibiscus. However, hibiscus not only gives honey wine its distinctive color, but, when combined with ginger and other spices, also provides an aromatic, spicy, and floral flavor.

To make honey wines, Dansk Mjød relies on old, traditional recipes with the addition of juices and herbs. Another special feature of many Danish meads is that fermentation is halted by adding alcohol. This gives the honey wine an unusual strength, which is kept in check by the remaining sweetness, achieving a liqueur-like smoothness and balance.
