Aprons were an integral part of the Viking costume. Basically, these overdresses were characterised by their straps and simple tube shape. These dresses were available with slits, with so-called geren (fabric wedges), with pleats and in variants that overlapped in the centre of the front. The hem ended at calf height.



The Viking Age pinafore (also known as a pinafore, hanging skirt or smokkr ) had two different functions. While the plain version was worn as an apron to protect clothing, the decorated version was more of a status symbol and was decorated with braids, embroidery, chains and brooches. This way of dressing is historically documented by haithabu finds and birka depictions.



Our plain slip dress is made from sturdy canvas (100% cotton) and is therefore very durable. It has a loose fit, side laces and is simple.



The apron dress should be combined with a discreet underdress and a belt. With the right accessories you can create a harmonious Nordic costume for a maiden or shieldmaiden.
