Noble medieval dress, Bliaud Josephine, red/black
This floor-length medieval dress has a form-fitting cut and comes with a belt. The fine cotton fabric, the contrasting satin details (material: 52% viscose, 48% polyester) and the attached edging give this dress a particularly elegant look. The wide flared sleeves are in a contrasting colour and can be worn rolled up.
The cut of the dress is typical of a bliaut (or bliaud ) and is based on fashion from the 11th to the 13th century. Whereas women's clothing was previously rather loose-fitting and concealed the curves of the body, clothing was now increasingly becoming body-hugging. The bliaut was originally a noble and courtly outer garment made of light fabrics and with flared trumpet sleeves. This shape of the sleeves made it clear to everyone that you belonged to a higher class, as they were not practical for everyday work. Over time, this form of dress also became popular among the bourgeoisie, but usually with narrow sleeves or with a knot at the hem of the long sleeve. The bliaut was not only worn by women, men also wore this outer garment, albeit in a knee-length version.
Characteristics of the bliaut are wide sleeves, fine fabrics and a full skirt. Trumpet sleeves were sometimes exaggerated in shape and sometimes reached the floor. The bliaut was usually combined with a veil and belt.
Representations of a bliaut from that period can be found, for example, in the fresco Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan and in the encyclopedic work Hortus Deliciarum from the late 12th century.
