Medieval Burglinde underdress with trumpet sleeves, natural
This loose-fitting floor-length medieval dress is made of light cotton. The geren (wedge-shaped pieces of fabric) inserted into the sides give the skirt a generous hem width. The neckline is wide enough so that the undergarment is hidden at the neck under the outer garment. The special sleeve cut stays close at the upper arm and has drawstrings for an individual fit. The hem of the sleeves is very wide, creating the typical trumpet shape. A surcot, cotehardie or bliaut can be worn over the undergarment.
Upper and lower dresses with particularly wide sleeves appeared in the 12th century. They were not only fashionable, but also a status symbol, because wearing such wide sleeves was not suitable for everyday workers. To protect their valuable, tight-fitting, often richly decorated outer garments, both men and women in the 12th and 13th centuries wore a simple undergarment with trumpet sleeves underneath. This was usually not visible because it was considered indecent. Depictions of wide sleeves from the 12th century can be found, for example, in the fresco Sant'Elena in the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Milan and in the illustrated encyclopaedic work Hortus Peliciarum (ca. 1180).
In the 15th century, a trumpet-sleeved undergarment was worn beneath a short-sleeved cotehardie (a close-fitting dress with laces or buttons down the centre front). When worn in this way, the undergarment was visible. Depictions of wide sleeves from the period can be found, for example, in Gerard David's painting Madonna Surrounded by Saints .
