Trippen, medieval wooden socks
Trippen are wooden wedges worn under delicate, reversible shoes in the Middle Ages. This was due to the heavily polluted and largely unpaved city streets and alleys. The expression "to trip" comes from these wedges and likely has an onomatopoeic origin.
Our casings are made from a single piece of poplar wood and have nailed leather tabs.
Trippen are available for the following shoe sizes:
38, 40, 42, 44, 46 Where our trippen are tied and a size 39 shoe can also be worn on a size 38 or 40 trippen. .
