This book presents a wonderful discovery. It shows for the first time the original drawings by Swiss physician and naturalist Conrad Gessner.
They served as the model for his world-famous book of animals . The first Latin edition, Historia Animalium (1550–1558), consisted of over 3,000 printed pages.
And countless woodcuts that shaped the representation of animals until the end of the 18th century. After more than 300 years, Florike Egmond managed to find what was thought lost.
Find templates for printed artwork in Amsterdam. The so-called Gessner platter albums feature realistic sea creatures, mammals, reptiles, and insects.
They are reproduced in full. The introduction tells the story of the sensational discovery and highlights Gessner's importance to the natural sciences.
