Purchase Tatami for Cutting Tests (Tameshigiri), Approx. 180 X 90 Cm.
Omote tatami, cutting test mat, approx. 180 x 90 cm
This straw mat is used to perform the traditional Japanese cutting test with a samurai sword (mostly a katana or wakizashi). The ancient art of tameshigiri , which was practiced in Japan both to test the effectiveness and sharpness of swords and to demonstrate the artistry of swordsmen and testers, is still very popular today. A wide variety of cuts and cutting techniques are practiced on one- or two-handed Omote mats with a sharpened sword. The quality of the blade and the skill of the performer can be seen in the cut surface of the mat.
Our Omote tatami are woven from straw. They are of simple but sturdy quality, easy to cut and, despite their affordable price, meet the requirements of a sword tester. An unbound mat of approximately 2 to 2.3 mm thickness and 180 x 90 cm is supplied. When rolled up, it has a diameter of approximately 8 cm.
To prepare for test cuts, the mat is rolled as tightly as possible, tied and soaked in water for a few hours to swell. The soaked roll must then be allowed to dry completely (placed upright). This process achieves the density or strength needed for cutting exercises. The finished wrapped mat can now be mounted and used on a tameshigiri stand.
In addition to their use as martial arts props, the tatami omotes offered here can also be used for other purposes and, for example, as floor coverings, panels, covers or simply as decoration (in the home, garden or even at Asian events).

It should be noted that cutting tests should only be carried out after having adequate experience in handling samurai swords. Lack of knowledge or skills can not only lead to damage or even breakage of the blade, but can also cause harm to health. We do not assume any liability for possible material damage, accidents or injuries that may result from the cutting test.
Please note that straw is a natural product and colour variations are quite common. Therefore, the images above serve only as exemplary illustrations. The colour may vary from greenish to yellowish or brownish and becomes lighter over time due to the normal ageing process of the straw. Direct sunlight accelerates this natural fading.
If the mat is not used immediately after delivery, store it in a dry place.
