Tannenberg 1410 - Disaster for the Teutonic Knights, Cam122

Tannenberg 1410: disaster for the Teutonic Knights
(Campaign 122)

Author: stephen turnbull
Illustrator: richard hook

Paperback; May 2003; 96 pages

About this book:
By 1400, the long-standing conflict between the Teutonic Knights Order and Poland and Lithuania was coming to a head, partly as a result of the Order’s meddling in the internal politics of its neighbors. In June 1410, King Wladislaw Jagiello of Poland invaded the Order’s territory with a powerful allied army that included all of the Teutonic Knights’ enemies: Poles, Lithuanians, Russians, Bohemians, Hungarians, Tatars, and Cossacks. This book recounts how, when the armies clashed in the wooded hills near the small village of Tannenberg, the Teutonic Knights suffered a disastrous defeat from which their Order never recovered.

The authors:
Stephen turnbull is recognised as one of the world's foremost military historians of the medieval and early modern periods. He first came to prominence with his 1977 book, the samurai: a military history. He has since achieved equal fame writing on european military subjects and has published 30 books. He has always sought to concentrate on the less familiar areas of military history, particularly subjects such as korea, eastern europe, the baltic states and the teutonic knights. stephen turnbull earned his first bachelor's degree at the university of cambridge and a phd at the university of leeds for his work on japanese religious history. he has travelled widely in europe and the far east and also runs a much-used picture library. his work has been recognised by the receipt of the canon prize of the british association for japanese studies and the japan festival literary prize. he currently divides his time between lecturing on japanese religion at the university of leeds and writing.

Richard hook was born in 1938 and educated at reigate college of art. After national service with the 1st bn, queen's royal regiment, he became art editor of the much-praised finding out magazine during the 1960s. He has since worked as a freelance illustrator, gaining an international reputation, particularly for his intimate knowledge of native american material culture; and has illustrated over 50 osprey titles. richard is married and lives in sussex; his three children, adam, jason and christa, are all professionally involved in a variety of artistic disciplines.
