Gift of Tannenberg 1410 - Disaster for the Teutonic Knights, Cam122
Tannenberg 1410: Disaster for the Teutonic Knights
(Campaign 122)
Author: Stephen Turnbull
Illustrator: Richard Hook
Paperback; May 2003; 96 pages
About this book:
Around 1400, the long conflict between the Teutonic Knights and Poland and Lithuania was reaching a critical point, partly as a result of the Order's interference in the domestic politics of its neighbors. In June 1410, King Wladislaw Jagiello of Poland invaded the Order's territory with a powerful allied army that included all of the Teutonic Knights' enemies: Poles, Lithuanians, Russians, Bohemians, Hungarians, Tatars, and Cossacks. This book recounts how, when the armies clashed in the wooded hills near the small village of Tannenberg, the Teutonic Knights suffered a disastrous defeat from which their Order never recovered.
The authors:
Stephen Turnbull is recognized as one of the world's foremost military historians of the medieval and early modern periods. He first rose to prominence thanks to his 1977 book, *The Samurai: A Military History*. Since then, he has achieved equal fame writing on European military subjects and has published 30 books. He has always tried to concentrate on the less familiar areas of military history, particularly such subjects as Korea, Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, and the Teutonic Knights. Stephen Turnbull earned his first degree from the University of Cambridge and a doctorate from the University of Leeds for his work on Japanese religious history. He has traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East and also runs a widely used picture library. His work has been recognized by receiving the British Association for Japanese Studies' Canon Award and the Japan Festival Literary Award. He currently divides his time between lecturing on Japanese religion at the University of Leeds and writing.
Richard Hook was born in 1938 and trained at Reigate College of Art. After National Service with the 1st Bn, Queen's Royal Regiment, he became Art Editor of the highly praised Finding Out magazine during the 1960s. Since then, he has worked as a freelance illustrator, gaining an international reputation, particularly for his intimate knowledge of Native American material culture; and has illustrated over 50 Osprey titles. Richard is married and lives in Sussex; his three children, Adam, Jason, and Christa, are all professionally involved in various artistic disciplines.
