The gladiator Spiculus was admired and favored by the Roman emperor Nero for his fighting skills. Spiculus was generously rewarded for his achievements in the arena, and Nero showered him with gifts and palaces. According to legend, when Nero knew he was about to die, he had his servants summon Spiculus to kill him, but to no avail.
Windlass designed this gladius to be true to its period yet worthy of a champion (a simple gladius was, of course, the sword carried by all common legionaries). The carbon steel blade is extra-long (approximately 61 cm) for greater reach in crucial moments of mortal combat. Despite its extra length, this sword weighs less than 1 kg and feels light and especially lively in the hand. The handle is made of natural bone and contrasts beautifully with the dark-stained wooden pommel and guard (as bone is a natural material, the color and grain may vary slightly from sword to sword).
The scabbard is made according to a historical model: from wood and wrapped in reddish-brown dyed leather. The gilded fittings make the scabbard a delight to the eye and feature relief depictions of a lion and a gladiator. The sword's pommel has a gold-plated blade cap.
Includes matching wooden case with leather sheath.
