The kettle hat, also known as a chapel hat or war hat, became a characteristic helmet of medieval European infantry between the 12th and 15th centuries. Its wide, sloping brim offered superior protection against downward blows, arrows, and debris—an essential advantage during siege warfare and battlefield engagements. Practical and affordable, the kettle hat was commonly used by crossbowmen, pikemen, and foot soldiers who needed both defense and clear vision. Its open design allowed for excellent hearing and situational awareness, making it particularly suitable for formations and castle defenses.

Handcrafted from 16-gauge mild steel, this helmet combines defense with striking visual authenticity. The polished finish not only enhances its appearance but also improves its corrosion resistance. Inside, a leather suspension liner cradles the head, with an adjustable snood and chin strap ensuring a secure and comfortable fit during extended use.

Unlike many generic replicas, this hat features precise rivet work, a gently flared brim, and a domed contour faithful to surviving museum specimens. Whether participating in HEMA combat, recreating historical encampments, or displaying them, it brings a genuine medieval character to any setting.

IDEAL FOR:

  • Historical game and live performance
  • HEMA and martial arts training
  • Theatrical and film productions
  • Museum-quality exhibitions
  • Collectors of authentic medieval weapons and armor

CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Clean the steel with a lightly oiled cloth after each use.
  • Store in a dry and ventilated place
  • Regularly inspect the rivets and seams of the lining
  • Occasionally condition leather for longevity ⭐.
