German Gothic Schaller with folding visor, 15th century, 2 mm steel



In the 15th century the schaller helmet replaced the saucer hood . By the middle of the century it had become one of the most widely used combat helmets throughout Europe. This type of helmet existed in many forms and variants, from simple to elaborate, open or peaked, with more or less pronounced neck protection, etc., and was especially popular in Italy ( celata ), Germany, France ( salade ) and England ( sallet ) are very popular.



The hand-forged Schaller we offer here is based on a German model dated around 1480-1490. It is made of 2 mm thick steel and is therefore suitable for combat use. The one-piece moulded helmet bell has a wide neck guard and a slight crest or ridge running along the crown. It is equipped with a movable and lockable visor which is fixed with steel rivets. When closed, the folding visor leaves a vision space of approximately 1 to 1.5 cm wide and 18 cm long with the lower edge extended forward, ensuring sufficient visibility and air circulation. The blackened interior has an adjustable leather inlay fixed with rivets and the leather chin strap is fitted with a brass buckle.



This late medieval visored helmet will make your transformation into a noble knight simply perfect and is of course also an excellent decorative addition to every helmet collector's treasure trove.
