German Schaller, medieval helmet, ca. 1480, 2 mm steel

– Suitable for show combat –

In the 15th century, the combat helmet known as the schaller replaced the breathing hood and became one of the most widely used helmets throughout Europe by the mid-century. This type of helmet could be found in a wide variety of shapes and variants - from the simplest to the most elaborate, open or with a peak, with more or less pronounced neck protection, etc. - and was especially popular in Italy ( celata ), Germany, France ( salade ) and England ( sallet ). At the dawn of the Renaissance, this medieval helmet eventually developed into the burgonet (balaclava) of the 16th century.

This authentic, fully battle-ready reconstruction of a German schaller made around 1480 was made of 2 mm steel and features a wide neck guard and a slight crest or ridge running along the crown of the head. The edge is scalloped all around and has decorative grooves. The rectangular viewing slit, approximately 1 to 1.5 cm wide and 14 cm long, ensures adequate visibility and, thanks to its tapered lower edge, also guarantees the necessary air circulation.

The interior is blackened for better protection against corrosion and features a riveted, adjustable and padded entrance made of black fabric. The sturdy chin strap, made of 2 mm thick brown leather, is fitted with an antique brass buckle.

This late medieval battle helmet is available in two sizes (m and l).
