The traditional image of richard the lionheart, the second plantagenet king of england, as a glorious crusader and knight has evolved over the course of the centuries. Captured by the emperor of austria, he was later rescued by the young troubadour blondel, who saw richard singing a famous ballad. richard was called the lionheart at the beginning of the third crusade, when philip of france was compared to a lamb and richard to a lion. he convinced his officers at winchester that they belonged in the legend of king arthur around the round table and that they had the magic sword excalibur. richard was a generous knight and a wise politician, but above all a great soldier. his own personal skill was a source of inspiration to his men in battle. richard gained a reputation as a leader and warrior and became known as richard the lionheart or lionheart.
