This beautiful decorative weapon is a faithful replica of an 1862 American Griswold & Gunnison percussion revolver: a copy of the Colt Navy Model 1851, which was used during the American Civil War in the southern Confederate states, was made.

Because the Confederates were unable to obtain weapons in the northern states, gunmaker Griswold & Gunnison in Griswoldville, Georgia, was commissioned to produce a .36 caliber (9 mm) muzzle-loading revolver. The Colt Navy 1851, the finest revolver of the time, was chosen as the model for this model. Although key features of the Colt model were retained, the most significant difference was the cylindrical barrel instead of the iconic octagonal design.

Beginning in 1862, approximately 3,600 copies of this replica were issued to the Confederates until the foundry was destroyed by opposing Union troops in late 1864. After the war, it continued to be used during the westward expansion period .

Our replica of this Southern revolver reflects the dimensions of the original weapon. Like the original, it has a 7.5-inch (approx. 19 cm) barrel, a single-action trigger, a loading ram, and a six-chambered revolving barrel that continues to rotate when the hammer is cocked. The decorative revolver combines wooden handles with gray, antique-finished metal elements.
