Griswold & Gunnison Confederate Revolver – The Brass of the Rebel South
From Georgia to the front, the Confederate firepower took shape in this unique combat weapon.
During the heated days of the Civil War , when the Southern arms industry had to improvise in the face of a Union naval blockade, one of the most iconic pieces of the Confederate arsenal emerged: the Griswold & Gunnison revolver . Inspired by the design of the Colt 1851 Navy , this Southern version was no mere copy, but an ingenious adaptation to the hostile and resource-poor environment of the South.
Manufactured mostly in Georgia and used by cavalry units and the Confederate Navy , this revolver was chambered in .36 caliber and fitted with a six-shot drum . Its modified construction included a Dragoon-style barrel and a progressive loading lever , making it more efficient for rapid reloading in combat.
One of its most distinctive features was the replacement of the steel frame with a brass one, given the lack of industrial metals in the South. Despite its limitations, the Griswold & Gunnison offered reasonable accuracy, with an effective range of between 45 and 70 meters .
