Short Viking spearhead with ornaments
The short-pointed Viking spear is a typical example of a spear of Celtic origin that reached Scandinavia. The short blade, naturally more stable, rigid, and resistant to breakage, was quite capable of piercing the armor commonly used at the time.
The decorated Hanwei spearheads designed by Paul Chen reflect the creative blend of Viking arts and crafts. Back then, weapons were often decorated with elaborate patterns that could be created using the niello technique. An alloy of several metals (especially silver) was mixed with sulfur. The mixture was rubbed into pre-engraved patterns and then fired. The engraved areas treated with this mixture remained black, and the remaining surface was polished to a high gloss. Although there is less alchemy involved in the decorative pattern-making process used by Hanwei, the result is still a lustrous and durable niello- like effect.
