During the Viking Age, the spear was significantly less expensive to produce than the sword and was therefore a much more common thrusting weapon. The wings attached to the beak (of Frankish origin) prevented the tip from penetrating too deeply and also served as an effective parrying element.



The decorated Hanwei spearheads designed by Paul Chen reflect the creative blend of Viking arts and crafts. Back then, weapons were often decorated with elaborate patterns that could be created using the niello technique. An alloy of various metals (especially silver) was mixed with sulfur.

The mixture was rubbed into pre-scratched patterns and then fired. The etched areas treated with this mixture remained black and the remaining surface was polished to a high gloss. Although there is less alchemy involved in the decorative pattern making process used by Hanwei, the result is still a brilliant and long lasting effect similar to that of niello .



Important information:

Only the spearhead (without shaft) is included in the delivery.

This spearhead is hollow and therefore non-functional.
