Discover Viking Javelin Point with Ornaments.
Viking javelin point with ornaments
The spearhead featured here has a narrow, tapered blade designed to penetrate chain. On the battlefield, Northmen often carried a few light javelins, which they held in the same hand as a shield when attacking. As soon as the opponent was close enough, these spears were thrown, and the warriors could wield their sword or axe unhindered in the ensuing hand-to-hand combat.
The decorated Hanwei spearheads designed by Paul Chen reflect the creative blend of Viking arts and crafts. Back then, weapons were often decorated with elaborate patterns that could be created using the niello technique. An alloy of several metals (especially silver) was mixed with sulfur. The mixture was rubbed into pre-engraved patterns and then fired. The engraved areas treated with this mixture remained black, and the remaining surface was polished to a high gloss. Although there is less alchemy involved in the decorative pattern-making process used by Hanwei, the result is still a lustrous and durable niello- like effect.
