Pugio of Vindonissa with silver inlays



A beautiful reconstruction of a Roman dagger, which was very artistically designed and with great craftsmanship. Both the riveted handle plates and the front plate of the scabbard are very elaborately decorated with silver inlays. The scabbard is made of wood, covered with leather and has the typical four riveted brass belt fittings. The blade has a total of four narrow grooves that fit together. The cutting edges are not sharpened.



The model of our replica comes from the Roman legionary camp of Vindonissa, today Windisch, Switzerland. The pommel features a trident, symbol of the Roman god of the sea Neptune. This could indicate that the pugio was originally made for an officer of the Roman naval forces.
