Combs are among the oldest known human tools. In the Middle Ages, they were not only used for combing hair, but also for preparing wool and other natural fibers for spinning and felting.


For added stability, the back of the comb has been reinforced with two bands of bone. However, bones are a fragile material, so the comb should be handled with care.
