It covers the neck and ears and is secured by two ribbons. In its day, the coif was a basic item of clothing for both men and boys of all social classes and was often worn under hats and helmets. Despite this widespread use, detractors sometimes referred to the coif as a "cootie cap" due to its ability to prevent the spread of head lice.
