Oni katana

Oni are mythical creatures from Japanese mythology that are roughly comparable to the demons and trolls of the Western world. Like gargoyles, in modern culture they are increasingly seen less as menacing creatures and increasingly take on the role of guardians or protectors. However, the extent of their power and ferocity remains unchanged.

The Japanese saying oni ni kanabo , which literally means oni with an iron club or invincible being , is perfect for this. Hanwei's oni katana blade is made of L6/Bainite steel. The blade geometry ensures excellent cutting performance. The handle ( tsuka ) is wrapped in black ray skin and silk cord, and the mount ( koshirae ) is decorated with classic oni motifs in different styles. The result is a unique combination of tradition and functionality.

Bainit is a carbon steel structure that combines high strength with excellent flexibility and impact resistance. Bainite has been known for several years as an excellent component for the production of katana blades, but to date, it has only been used by absolutely top-level master smiths. The production of katana blades with a bainite body and an extremely hard martensite edge ( yakiba ) is a very difficult process requiring a sophisticated heat treatment procedure.

Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process and uses I-6 tool steel (a very strong, low-alloy carbon steel) as the basis for the production of this katana. The blades are forged as usual and then carefully heat-treated to achieve optimal bainite and martensite formation. Finally, they are polished.
