Enjoy Niedermörmter Italic -H-, Roman Helmet, Steel and Brass
Niedermörmter italic 'h', Roman helmet, steel and brass
Type according to HR Robinson: imperial italic h
Continental classification: Weisenau-Niedermörmter/Guttmann type
Detailed reconstruction of the 'AG 800' from Axel Guttmann's famous old collection, liquidated and auctioned a few years ago. The find in the river is said to be from the Balkans, but its exact location is unknown.
After the figurative decorations, the helmet is also called the "mouse and loaf of bread." While the typical round loaf shape is known from finds in a bakery in Pompeii, the mouse or rat was a common symbol that also appeared on lamps or knife handles.
The helmet corresponds to a similar find from the town of Niedermörmter, on the Lower Rhine (Germany). Compared to the earlier "Weisenau" models, the neck protection is now especially extensive, a reaction to the enemies of the time and their weapons. The cheek pieces missing from the original were reconstructed through extensive research.
Here the magnificent original is reproduced in every detail, down to the delicate grid pattern of the headband.
