Give Yourself Naginata, Paul Chen
Naginata
The naginata, the famous weapon of the sohei (warrior monks) of medieval Japan, was a fearsome weapon in the hands of a skilled fighter and remains of great importance in martial arts today.
Paul Chen's naginata, while retaining its traditional qualities, has been adapted to the needs of martial artists who train with bladed and edged weapons.
The naginata blade was forged true to the original from 1065 carbon steel and hardened along the edge, traditionally with a clay coating. The blade is mounted on a long tang to provide better shock absorption and has a strong distal taper for improved balance and speed.
The finely engraved tsuba features a silver butterfly motif. The one-piece ebu (stem) is extremely stable and has a teardrop-shaped section to detect the blade's direction, as well as a black, non-slip surface for improved weapon control.
The naginata comes with a wooden saya and a cloth sheath.
