Germanic fire bat

A hand-forged flintlock bat made of carbon-containing iron, as used in the early Middle Ages.

A grave find from Bavaria served as the model for this medieval brazier.

If you strike the refractory steel against the sharp edge of a flint, sparks are created which jump to the dry tinder and make it glow. In the past, so-called tinder sponges were used as tinder, which were obtained from tree sponges and made to glow by dipping them in a saltpeter solution or rubbing them with black powder.
