By the mid-14th century, armour had become so advanced that a sword blow could hardly damage it. At this point, the knight or man-at-arms picked up a good, solid war hammer. Heavy blows could damage and shatter armour, severely impairing freedom of movement and the ability to defend oneself. This hammer has a large spike at the end and small spikes on the sides. The rear spike is thick and capable of piercing armour. The head is attached to the wooden handle with springs from the shaft, which also has rivets for a secure grip.
