Gift Mara & Solatge Aranda - Deria Cd

Cd: mara & solatge aranda - dèria

Solatge is a Catalan poetic word for what remains and can be translated in German as "scum." The saying "als solatgeshi ha la flor" (the flower grows in the dregs) expresses the poetry of the word even more precisely. "Solatge" is the flower that grew after the final dissolution of the group l'ham de foc, but it is much more than a delicate plant.
The first album, "Dèria," is a rather strong statement from Mara Aranda, who was the voice of the Valencian group L'Ham de Foc for 10 years and, along with her longtime partner Efrén López, was also the leader and driving force behind the group. More recently, Mara has become known thanks to the projects Aman Aman and, above all, the project Al Andaluz, which she launched with the German group Estampie.

Mara is supported primarily by musicians from her musical background, such as Eduard Navarro (dolzaine, nyckelharpa, bagpipes, lute, etc.), who was an integral part of L'Ham de Foc from beginning to end. Josep-Mariaribelles (Celtic harp) appeared as a guest musician on -Cor de Porc- (L'Ham de Foc's third album) and has appeared as a guest musician at several of L'Ham de Focal's concerts. Manolo López (double bass) has already played for Aman Aman several times. Only Jota Martínez (bouzouki, hurdy-gurdy, Majorcan tambourine, Renaissance guitar, etc.) joins the band as a completely new member.

The title - dèria - also comes from Catalan and means the idea or obsession that serves as a drive or motivation, without which humanity would rarely achieve its goal. The idea of this CD was to use traditional music from the time of the Crown of Aragon as a basis for new contemporary compositions. Mara's voice is more prominent than in L'ham de foc and, as usual, manages to color the music with her own emotional, temperamental, and Mediterranean character. The experienced band manages to support her voice with the right tones and always shine with instrumental accents.

The CD includes a 52-page booklet with poetic reflections and explanations of the pieces, written by Josep Vicent Frechina (in Catalan, Spanish, and English). For all fans of l'ham de foc and Mara Aranda, 'Deria' is a must-have album that clearly underlines Mara Aranda's outstanding quality.

...Without a doubt, the new album she presents reaches the quality of Mara's previous projects, both L'ham de foc and Aman Aman, and the personality of her singing style constitutes the main characteristic of her identity. - Antonio Aguirre, Rhythms of the World (Spain) on 'Deria'
