In Japanese culture, the praying mantis has always been a symbol of cunning and strength and is therefore a highly respected leitmotif on Japanese swords.

Featuring a new shobu zukuri style hanwei l6/bainite blade with bo-hi as well as a prominent koshirae the praying mantis katana is a sought after and functional piece.

The tsuka-ito made of silk in a dull green and the deep brown of the saya offer a beautiful contrast to the dark copper and gold details of the tsuba , fuchi and kashira .

The praying mantis stalks its next prey, reflecting the strength and grace of this extraordinary katana.

Bainite is a carbon steel structure that combines high strength with excellent flexibility and shock resistance. Bainite has been known for several years as an excellent component for the production of katana blades, but so far it is only used by top-level master swordsmiths for the production of katana blades with a bainite body and an extremely hard martensite edge. (yakiba) requires a very difficult process that requires a sophisticated heat treatment procedure.

Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process and uses l-6 tool steel (a very robust, low-alloy carbon steel) as the basis for the production of this katana sword. The blades are forged as usual and then carefully heat-treated to achieve the optimal formation of bainite and martensite. Finally, they are polished.
