In Japanese culture, the praying mantis has always been a symbol of cunning and strength and is therefore a highly respected leitmotif in Japanese swords.

Featuring a new Hanwei L6/Bainite shobu zukuri style blade with bo-hi as well as prominent koshirae, the Praying Mantis Katana is a sought-after and functional piece.

The tsuka-ito made of silk in a muted green and the deep brown of the saya provide a beautiful contrast with the dark copper and gold details of the tsuba , fuchi and kashira .

Bainite is a carbon steel structure that combines high strength with excellent flexibility and impact resistance. Bainite has been known for several years as an excellent component for katana blade production, but until now, it has only been used by top-level master smiths to produce katana blades with bainite bodies and extremely hard martensite edges. (yakiba) requires a very difficult process that requires a sophisticated heat treatment procedure.

Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process and uses I-6 tool steel (a very strong, low-alloy carbon steel) as the basis for the production of this katana. The blades are forged as usual and then carefully heat-treated to achieve optimal bainite and martensite formation. Finally, they are polished.
