Mainz type gladius, windlass



The Roman army took a direct and pragmatic approach to warfare. The gladius was chosen as the most important secondary weapon because it was practical and efficient and performed excellently in all close combat situations. With this sword, the Romans conquered most of the then known world. The original pieces of this replica were unearthed from the ruins of Pompeii. Examples can be found in the book “What the Soldiers Wore on Hadrian's Wall” by H. Russell Robinson.



Early gladius, such as this version based on the Mainz pattern, had a wasp-shaped waist and long point that combined cutting and stabbing power in one practical weapon. This replica of the Mainz model has a bone handle with decorated brass appliqués on the scabbard. Made from carbon steel by Windlass Steelcrafts and comes factory sharpened.



Includes matching wooden case with leather sheath and brass appliqués.
