Lorica squamata, Roman scale armour with double shoulder pads, brass



The Roman armour known as lorica squamata was primarily used (in many different forms and types) in the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, at the height of the Roman Empire. Although no complete suit of armour has yet been found, many fragments and individual scales ( squamae ) have been recovered, and numerous surviving depictions lead experts to believe that the lorica squamata was worn not only by officers of the Imperial-era Roman army, but also by legionaries and auxiliaries, cavalrymen, archers, and even standard-bearers and musicians.



This high quality two-part reproduction of a Lorica squamata is hand-made and completely wearable. It consists of approximately 0.4 cm thick cast brass plates (with a central rib), which are interlocked in horizontal rows and sewn onto a solid brown canvas (cotton canvas) base. This creates a dense pattern reminiscent of fish scales. The sleeveless cuirass is trimmed with sturdy brown leather and features two leather straps and brass buckles on either side, allowing it to be adjusted to fit a variety of sizes. It reaches to below the hips and has a serrated bottom edge and a round neckline with a slit at the back neck opening.



The chest/back armour comes with additional shoulder protection. This fully removable double bandolier (also consisting of brass scales sewn onto fabric with a stitched leather edge) fastens at the front with a brass breast hook and at the back with four adjustable leather straps and brass buckles.



This stunning Roman armour is ideal for reenactment, larp, ​​stage or TV/film.
