Ligula, Roman Brass Spoon.
Ligula, Roman spoon made of brass with oval bowl
In general, Roman ancient spoons can be divided into two basic types:
While the cochlear (pl. cochlearia ) had a smaller spoon-like bowl (the so-called spoon ) and a straight, pointed handle with a sharp end, the ligule (pl. ligulae ), generally larger and heavier, was distinguished by a rather generous, often oval bowl and a stem with a rounded end or decorative knob.
In archaeological circles, it is believed that ligules were sometimes used as dinner spoons, but primarily for garnishing and serving. Numerous finds demonstrate that these serving spoons were used for several centuries. Excavations have revealed variations in a wide variety of shapes and materials, from simple to elaborate, made of wood, bone, or metal. The fact that some silver and bronze versions were found as grave goods suggests that these more noble versions were often not everyday utensils but prestige items.
This reproduction of a ligula spoon with a deep, almond-shaped bowl (an oval-shaped bowl with a slight point) is made of brass. The transition between the bowl and the handle is stepped, and the single, slightly tapered handle ends with a small, spherical decorative knob. This beautiful piece of Roman cutlery is excellent for living history purposes and a lovely addition to any Roman reenactor's kit.
