Landsknecht Cookbook

The bold image of the Landsknechtes, with their extravagant clothing and adventurous exploits, has endured to this day. Back then, they were considered insatiable drunkards and fussy eaters. Agents feared their wrath if food supplies didn't arrive. Their songs tell of complaints about hunger and cold, but also of dreams of roast chicken and cool wine.

But what did they have on their plates? In a detailed introduction, this book traces the facts behind the legend. What was life like for the Landsknechte? How were they fed? What foods did they know, and how did they prepare them? Based on sources from the 15th and 16th centuries, the book offers more than 50 recipes that were familiar to the Landsknechte and fed them in good times or bad.

More than 50 recipes reflect both historical and contemporary tastes. Each original recipe is accompanied by instructions for preparation in a modern kitchen. All ingredients and basic dishes are thoroughly described, and the cookbook also offers detailed information about the Landsknechte way of life, including their eating habits and table manners.

About the author

Volker Bach has been working in the field of Living History for twenty years. Since his studies, he has been particularly fascinated by the history of cuisine and, in addition to his work as a language teacher and translator, he teaches courses on historical cooking. The cookbook Landsknecht is his first book in German, and we would like to add an English edition to reach the international community as well.
