Gift Lanza Yari, Rattan Winding.
Yari spear, rattan coiling
Paul Chen's yari was an essential weapon of the samurai on the battlefields of feudal Japan, and required great skill to handle and maneuver due to its size and length.
This piece is built according to the su-yari , or straight spear, design. The double-edged, triangular blade is forged from T10 carbon steel and features a deep groove on the flat side of the blade. Heat treatment creates a clear line of hardness ( hamon ) on each edge. The tang is maintained for a long time to ensure better shock absorption. The shaft ( ebu ) has a black-painted surface and has a flattened section on the bottom to better identify the blade position. The spear’s durability is further enhanced by the staff’s one-piece construction.
This version has a 28 cm (11 in) blade, making the spear a swift weapon. The top handle is also wrapped in rattan for a striking look.
