Gift Yari Spear, Rattan Winding.
Yari spear, rattan coiling
Paul Chen's yari was an essential weapon of samurai on the battlefields of feudal Japan, and required great skill to handle and maneuver due to its size and length.
This piece is constructed according to the su-yari , or straight spear, design. The triangular, double-edged blade is forged from T10 carbon steel and features a deep groove on the flat side of the blade. Heat treatment creates a clear line of hardness ( hamon ) on each edge. The tang is held sharp for a long time to ensure better shock absorption. The shaft ( ebu ) has a black painted surface and has a flattened section at the bottom to better identify the position of the blade. The spear’s durability is further enhanced by the staff’s one-piece construction.
This version has a 28cm (11in) blade, making the spear a fast weapon. The top handle is also wrapped in rattan to give it an impressive look.
