Roman beneficiary's spear
Benefactors are documented as early as the 1st century AD and performed a variety of tasks in the Roman Empire. Within the legions, they were assigned to the principals, the non-commissioned officers. Outside of normal service, benefactors were stationed as highway police on important external and internal borders of the empire and controlled the movement of goods.
The spear offered here was their distinctive symbol, by which they could be recognized from afar.
