The private life of the Romans
Joachim Marquardt is one of the most important German classical philologists of the 19th century. His classic, first published in 1879-82, is considered the standard scholarly work on Roman everyday life in antiquity and its content is still not outdated. In it he gives an informed account of all aspects of the private life of the ancient Romans, divided into two parts. The first part is devoted to the family sphere with the chapters: Family and Marriage, Children and Education, Slaves, House, Everyday Life and Burial. The second part entitled Acquisition and Entertainment‹ teaches about economic life and clothing, housing and household furnishings (also from cultural and art-historical aspects), intellectual activity, entertainment and games. Thanks to its comprehensible language and clear, systematic structure, it remains a valuable reference work to this day.
