Treat Yourself To The Plague In Berlin 1576
The plague in Berlin 1576
By diethelm eikermann and gabriele kaiser
The first poster printed in Berlin was probably a Plague Regiment (a public attack against the Black Death in 1576) and comes from Leonhart Thurneisser zum Thurn, the personal physician of Elector Johann Georg of Brandenburg. It is a unique testimony to early modern literature and pharmacy, which has gone unnoticed in the history of literature and science and is presented and discussed here for the first time. The book contains a facsimile of this rare single-sheet print.
Cologne-based Thurneisser researcher Dr. Diethelm Eikermann and Berlin librarian Dr. Gabriele Kaiser report on the life of Berliners in the 16th century and on the fight against the plague by the once-famous, now-forgotten physician Thurneisser. They shed light on the history of the origins and effects of his writings on the plague and explain the remedies and instructions listed there.
