It is a wing-shaped spearhead, cleverly pierced and elaborately wrapped in sections with silver wire and bevelled with brass sheet. On the brass plate is the Latin inscription: lancea et clavus domini, which translates as the lance and the nail of the lord .

The Holy Lance (also Lance of Longinus, Lance of Maurice or Lance of Destiny) is the oldest piece of imperial regalia of the kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. It supposedly contains a piece of a nail from the cross of Christ (holy nail). According to legend, the lance belonged to Maurice, leader of the Theban Legion, or according to other sources, to the Roman centurion Longinus, who used it to ensure the death of Jesus, and is said to have been soaked in his holy blood.

It was sometimes the most important item of clothing, later the imperial crown took its place. The tip of the spear was kept in a cavity inside the crossbar of the imperial cross.
