The Danish word klapøjster mjød is inspired by an old Danish tradition that emerged in the late Middle Ages: mixing mead with schnapps. This mixed drink was known in South Jutland as klapøjster, a dialect word for somersault .

The addition of aquavit gives this honey wine its unique flavor. With its schnapps aftertaste, it's stronger than classic mead, yet retains its typical sweet taste.

To make honey wines, Dansk Mjød relies on old, traditional recipes with the addition of juices and herbs. Another special feature of many Danish meads is that fermentation is halted by adding alcohol. This gives the honey wine an unusual strength, which is kept in check by the remaining sweetness, achieving a liqueur-like smoothness and balance.
