Gift Kerstin Blodig/ian Melrose-kelpie - Var Det Du-var Det Deg? CD
Cd: kerstin blodig/ian melrose-kelpie - var det du-var det deg?
From Celtic-Scandinavian roots to new acoustic music
'Var det du—var det degrees?—is like a journey through the frozen Norwegian landscape, where every frosty tree and snowdrift holds a new and exciting secret. And then you experience the wonders of spring and summer. And so this CD spans the entire arc of perfection, of music and seasons, of love and suffering, of fairy tales and truth.' (p. Seitz)
The kelpie duo, kerstin blodig and ian melrose - 'the celtic-scandinavian dream team' - consists of two renowned figures from the global celtic and scandinavian music scene, whose regular collaboration has spanned thirteen years. Their diverse projects include: their international concert and festival tours as a kelpie duo, as a solo artist with the bands norland wind and talking water, as well as numerous cd productions in which they have performed. Producers, composers, arrangers and musicians were and are focused on their new duo album.
'Var det du -var det deg?' (Was it you or was it you?), a play on singable words with a musical sound in the tradition of Norwegian sing-along dance tunes, is the title of the new album. Like the previous CD, the cover is adorned with a painting by Norwegian painter Theodor Kittelsen: 'nøkken,' the water troll. 'Kelpie' is the Scottish counterpart, a mysterious aquatic creature from Scottish mythology. It's unmistakable that the kelpie duo has a soft spot for mystical creatures, as 'troll expert' Kerstin dedicated her solo CD 'Trollsang' to the underground in 2004.
The new CD combines two exciting elements: new titles from Kelpie's live repertoire and new compositions for the soundtrack of Kai-Uwe Küchler's slideshow 'Fjord-Norway'. While Kelpie's first CD was intended to be purely acoustic and deliberately arranged sparingly to reflect the impression of a live concert, the new album is designed as a full-scale production and, through the possibility of overdubs, reflects Kelpie's full spectrum of multi-instrumental and musical compositional possibilities and diversity of ideas. The three fantastic guest musicians—Peter Jakk, Talking Water bassist and percussionist Urs Fuchs, and Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, radio, and music producer Leiv Solberg, here active as a fiddler of the Norwegian natural instrument Hardingfele—give the CD the finishing touches with additional brilliant timbres.
Kerstin and Ian offer a varied program and consciously play with opposites: from typical, intimate kelpie arrangements to opulent orchestral pieces; from rough traditional music, sung and played microtonally, unusual for the Central European ear, to beautiful, catchy ballads; from exuberant, wild underground festivals to religious psalms. The CD conveys an emotional diversity of different inspirations, whether traditional folk ballads or images of breathtaking mountain and fjord landscapes.
Recorded, mixed, and mastered to the highest audiophile quality by sound engineer Jörg Surrey, this special acoustic album is completed by emotional depth and dramatic tension, beautifully crafted arrangements, fused vocal harmonies, mystical flutes, virtuoso guitars, and Kerstin Blodig's crystalline voice floating above it all.
