Historically, the katana was one of the traditional Japanese swords used by samurai in federalist Japan.
The first use of katana as a word to describe a long sword, different from a tachi, already exists in the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
The katana was often paired with a similar smaller companion sword, such as a wakizashi, or it could also be paired with the tanto, a smaller, similarly shaped dagger. Pairing a katana with a smaller sword is called a daisho. Only samurai were allowed to carry the daisho: it represented the samurai's social power and personal honour.
The katana is characterized by its distinctive appearance: a curved, thin, single-edged blade with a circular guard and a long two-handed handle.
