In 1876, samurai were forbidden to use their swords in public. This attempt to put an end to an age-old tradition was not accepted by the proud warrior class, and so the wooden katana was born. The revered blades were now hidden by harmless staffs, but the katana continued to exist.

The Hanwei Bamboo Stick Katana combines an artfully carved bamboo sword scabbard and handle with a blade (nagasa), which is hand-made. Forged and made of 1065 carbon steel, it was hardened in a traditional way with a layer of clay. The hardness of the edge and the strength of the blade body, which are created by this technique, embody the true secret of the samurai sword.
