Gift Katana with Wood - Shirasaya, Marto
Katana with wood - shirasaya
Shirasaya was a special type of sword mount designed to store the blade more gently and more effectively overnight or when not in use for long periods of time. The advantage of the untreated wood used was its low acid content and the absence of other ingredients that could damage the blade. It was not treated afterward, but instead absorbed the resulting moisture from the sword and directed it outward. The katana remained dry and did not rust. Shirasaya were often provided with an inscription ('sayagaki') containing information about the blade, such as its origin, place and time of forging, and the name of the smith and expert.
From the Emperor until the end of the 19th century, the carrying of bladed weapons was prohibited, all decoration was reduced to the handle and
The tsuba and the shirasaya set known today were created. The user didn't attract much attention due to the katana's similarity to a sword or a wooden staff, and he had the opportunity to carry it with him.
